Welcome to Part 9 of our Korean listening practice series!


Today, we’ll focus on expressions related to Korean restaurant! Have you ever been to a Korean restaurant before? How was your experience?
Do you know how to place orders, how to pay, and the general dining customs? In this post, we will explore all of these together!
Let’s learn some phrases together to talk about this topic!

1. Get to know important vocab and become acquainted with grammar concepts.
2. Watch the video without subtitles initially, then review with subtitles.
3. Listen repeatedly and mimic the speaker. Aim to listen at least once daily until you’re comfortable with the sentence structures and expressions.

Grammar points

는 것used to change verbs turning them into nouns.
~ㄴ/은 편 이다on the [adjective/adverb] side, tend to, fairly

ㄹ/을 필요가 있다/없다there is a need/ no need to
-ㄴ/은/는데but, background info

Water is free at Korean restaurants. So I don’t usually order drinks.

콜라나 사이다, 탄산음료는 가끔 먹는 편이에요.
I sometimes drink cola, sprite, and soda.

반찬들도 많이 나오는데 공짜로 리필할 수 있어요. 우리는 밥과 국과 다양한 반찬을 같이 먹어요.
A lot of side dishes come out as well, you can refill them for free. We eat rice, soup, and various side dishes together.

I don’t call the staff when I pay, but I go to the counter and pay.

한국에는 팁 문화가 없어서, 팁도 줄 필요가 없어요.
There is no tipping culture in Korea, so there’s no need to tip.

우리는 거의 항상 카드로 계산해요. 현금은 거의 쓰지 않는 편이에요.
We almost always pay with a card. I rarely use cash.

휴대폰으로 쉽게 계산할 수 있어서, 지갑은 거의 안 들고 다녀요.
I can easily pay with my phone, so I rarely carry my wallet.

한국 사람들은 보통 밥을 먹고 카페에 가서 디저트를 먹어요.
Koreans usually eat meals and go to cafes to eat dessert.

케이크나 쿠키 아이스크림 등, 단 디저트를 많이 먹는 편이에요.
