In Korean, “Pride” is 자존심.

And to express “It hurts my pride,” we can say “자존심 상해



상하다 means “to be hurt” or “to be damaged.” The phrase 자존심 상해 is used to express that something has hurt your pride or ego.


Let’s take a look at different formalities!


자존심 상해. (informal)
자존심 상해요. (pretty formal)
자존심 상하네요. (pretty formal)
자존심 상합니다. (very formal)



You can add “이” particle after “자존심”.
“자존심이 상해!” is also commonly used.

걔가 한 말 때문에 진짜 자존심 상했어.
His words really hurt my pride. 😓


엄마가 나를 자주 무시해서 자존심 상해요.

There are 3 Common Ways to Say “Don’t Let Your Pride Get in the Way”


The most common way is,
자존심 세우지 마 (informal)
자존심 세우지 마세요 (formal)


세우다 means “To set up, to raise”. And -지마 ending is used to express “Don’t!”.
So literally it means “Don’t raise your pride”.


Examples


문제를 해결하고 싶으면 자존심 세우지 마.
If you want to solve the problem, don’t let your pride get in the way. 🤝

우리 관계를 위해 자존심 세우지 마세요.
For the sake of our relationship, don’t let your pride get in the way. 💑



You can swtich “세우다” to “내세우다“, which carries a slightly stronger nuance than 세우다.



Examples

중요한 일에서는 자존심 내세우지 마세요.
In important matters, don’t let your pride get in the way.

네가 잘못했으면 자존심 내세우지 마.
If you are wrong, don’t let your pride get in the way.



The other common way is :
자존심 부리지 마 (informal)
자존심 부리지 마세요 (formal)!


This is a slightly different way to say it, using the verb 부리다 which means to show or display.

So it can translate as “To show your pride,” but it is mostly used in negative settings.


Examples

친구들 앞에서 자존심 부리지 마.
Don’t show your pride too much in front of your friends.


부모님한테는 자존심 부리지 마세요.
Don’t show too much pride to your parents.
